The Swedish ambassador Jan Eliasson, chief negotiator for the project of a Human Rights Council, is scheduled to arrive this morning in Geneva. The UN in Geneva is going to try to do some serious remodeling of its human rights organization this week. Officials will attempt to put a close to a discredited ’Human Rights Commission’ and replace it with a new and functioning ’Human Right’s Council,’ which would meet year-round and have its membership restricted to countries that abide by the highest human rights standards. Eliasson will be in Geneva during three days to make the final adjustments on the ’Council Project’ as well as to consult with member states and NGOs. The idea is to create the new, stronger UN Human Right’s entity before the end of 2005.
