August 1st is a special day for the whole Switzerland as on this day the country celebrates its Swiss National Day. The day marks the union of the three states – Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden that form the nation and was concluded in 1921. Although the action tends to be concentrated around separate communities around the Canton, all the districts have their festive atmosphere. The main part of the day is a pyrotechnic show which features bonfires, fireworks and paper lantern parade through the streets. Of course, there will also be official speeches told and national songs performed, but you can also enjoy dancing, eating and drinking (don’t forget to try local wines and sausages!).
