The federal government could lose up 500 million francs in revenues because of a new tax measure in favor of married couples. For many years in Switzerland, it made more financial sense to live out of wedlock than to get married. Officials in Bern have come up with a procedure that will give married people deductions of 2,500 francs, a figure that could rise to as much as 12,500 francs for families with double incomes. The federal government says that it is taking the expensive measures because it will eliminate many of the cases of discrimination against married people.
