Swiss cities received more than 50 centimeters of snow this weekend. Over 100 roads were blocked and the risk of avalanches is at its highest level in the Alps. A powerful cold front came down on Switzerland from the Northwest and caused serious chaos in German-speaking Switzerland. Geneva was spared from most of the snow but very cold temperatures are expected to sweep through the entire country during the next couple of days. Both the A1 and the A2 highways, the country’s main transportation arteries, had to be closed during the early hours of Sunday morning. Authorities in the canton of Aarau opened emergency shelters for some 190 drivers who got stuck on the roads on Saturday night. The Basel-Mulhouse airport was closed until noon on Sunday, and airport in Zurich suffered from serious delays.
