The Federal Veterinarian’s Office’s plan to ban a variety of ’dangerous breeds of dogs’ has received a hail of critique from concerned professionals. On 18 December, several associations of dog owners and cantonal veterinarians voiced their disapproval of the planned ban. Head veterinarian Fabien Loup in the canton of Fribourg, explains that a dog’s aggressiveness is not linked to its breed, but to the way it is raised and how it is treated. An association of veterinarians from Western cantons argues that the government’s ban could be counter-productive: people would get the false impression that only the dogs on the notorious list are aggressive, when in reality, all dogs are potentially dangerous.
