Geneva wants to make cultural events accessible to people with low incomes and has created a ’voucher’ to that effect. City minister Patrice Mugny presented his ’cultural checks’ on Monday. Mugny explained that the deal only applied to low-income people who did not already benefit from the traditional discounts for youths, unemployed, or elderly. The city says that the target-market includes some 15,000 people aged from 25 to 64, but authorities believe that only about 3,000 will pick up their vouchers. The checkbook is free of charge and includes six coupons, worth 10 francs each. Authorities believe that the project will cost them approximately 150,000 francs in 2006. The magistrate hopes that the measure will democratize museums and increase the number of visitors.
